Butler Academy – Wine Training Day

Butler Training – Excellent day in Stellenbosch Winelands.

By Candice Solan: Butler Student of the South African Butler Academy

Today was an excellent day. We got to visit the beautiful Cape Winelands and were lucky enough to be guests at the re-knowned Fairview and Simonsig wine estates.

Simonsig is an Estate farm – being that all their grape varietals, bottling, labeling and packaging happens on the estate itself. Elisma took us around the whole winery and explained the exact process of vinification, from seed to glass. Simonsig mainly uses American and French Oak barrels to mature their red wine varietals, using mainly steel tanks for their white varietals. Simonsig also was the first wine estate to produce/create an MCC in South Africa, the Kaapse Vonkel.

Fairview is known for their magnificent cheeses and their delicious wines. All their cheese is made on the farm itself. Fairview however cannot call itself a wine estate, due to the fact that they do not grow all of their grape varietals on the farm. They source a lot of their grapes from Fairview owned farms in Darling. Thanks to Rita, we now know exactly which of the Fairview cheeses go perfectly with the Fairview wines.

Did you know? The poorer the soil, the better the quality of the grape. This is because the grape plant feels “threatened” in its environment and automatically produces more lucious and appealing fruit so as to attract the birds in order to start the process of germination.

Thank you Mr. Cross, Mr. Coetzer, Mr. West, Elisma and Rita for an absolutely excellent day that will not be forgotten.

Butler Training in Hout Bay – Housekeeping Practical @ Hout Bay Manor

Posted on: May 21st, 2013 by Adriaan Coetzer 12 Comments

HOUT BAY BUTLER TRAINING – HOUT BAY MANOR

Our training for today was the privilege of Housekeeping 101 & Hotel Butler Training at Hout Bay Manor. Hout Bay Manor was built in 1871, accompanied with neo-classist Xhosa and Zulu finishing touches, the wooden floors combined with stone serve as witness to an old world charm. Nestled between the hills of Hout Bay, this five star Hotel offers 19 luxury rooms and peace and serenity to body, mind and soul.

Ms. Lucia, the hotel Manager, surprised the students on arrival with coffee, a variety of muffins as well as a fruit salad as palate cleanser! We then proceeded with our specialized cleaning. We were not at all surprised to find the rooms in an absolute pristine condition, as one would expect from a five star hotel. However we still needed to be taught how new and antique furniture is wiped down and treated and how to proceed with caution. It is essential to a hotel and client with so many beautiful delicate accessories, not to damage anything. We then enjoyed a lovely lunch served by Ms. Lucie’s kitchen staff. Thank you for making us feel so very special! A special thank you to the chefs of Hout Bay Manor for the freshly baked muffins. A lovely day out and our thanks goes once again to Mr. West and Mr. Coetzer for taking time out of their busy schedules to accompany the students on this field trip!

Yacht Butler Training Cape Town

BUTLER TRAINING – YACHT SERVICES BY THE BUTLER ACADEMY

At the Butler Academy we teach our Butlers the world of Luxury service. The Butlers enjoyed an incredible day out at Cape Town Yacht Yard.

Please see Butlers Blogs Below:

With the recent launch of the world’s largest privately owned super yacht to date, the “Eclipse”, attention was brought to the position as a yacht butler. Many people may ask or wonder what are your duties on a yacht as a butler?

The best way to answer or describe this question is as follow; take the large household with all the usual butler duties and place it in the middle of the ocean, taking away the usual resources that come with a household, e.g. quickly phone for a plumber or go to the shop for a litre of milk.

A few things to keep in mind when applying or even considering a position on a yacht are; your working world is much smaller. The guest to staff ratio is lower, and therefore there is a lot more one-on-one attention that must be paid. The normal shift or working day is gone as there is no “escape” from guest or even fellow staff/crew members after a working day.

A Yacht Butler has to be very organised and prepared to anticipate for all events on the open sea. No picking up of phone to order or request an item on short notice. He/she should know the guests likes and dislikes very well. Responsibilities include detailed and seamless service to the guest from the moment they arrive on board until disembarking. A good knowledge on the destinations and services provided at the port of call e.g. hairdressers, limousine services and restaurants.

At the end of the day to be a good butler in a house or super yacht, you do need to detail, anticipatory, friendly not familiar, privacy and confidentiality, invisible and available at all times.
