The Ultimate Code of Honour for Butlers

  • The Code of Honour was designed so that you may know and understand your responsibilities and obligations.
  • It provides guidance for those times when you find yourself in a difficult situation or when you experience a conflict of interest.
  • Integrity and ethical conduct are the very foundation or the Butling profession.
  • Always act in the best interests of your employer and treat everyone with whom you may come into contact in the course of your work with respect, courtesy and sensitivity.
  • Respect your colleagues and seek their input when you come across a situation to which you do not hold the answer.
  • You must perform your duties with diligence, impartiality and to the best of your ability.
  • Do not discriminate against anyone based on sex, sexual orientation, age, marital status, pregnancy, child-bearing abilities, race, colour and nationality, lawful religious or political belief or activity, disability and impairment.
  • As a member of the community, you have a right to public comment as long as these comments, but you must refrain from making any public comment about your employer.
  • You must store all private information securely and not disclose it to any person except in the course of your official duties.
  • Do not use or communicate private information about your employer without his or her permission. If you release information, you may be liable for legal action.
  • You must receive permission from your employer before you address or chair a seminar organised by professional co-ordinators.
  • In the course of your work, conflict of interest may arise and you may have private interests that differ from those of your employer, but these conflicts should be settled in the favour of your employer rather than your own.
  • You should not seek or accept any gifts or favours for services performed in connection with your official duties.
  • Immediately report to your employer any circumstance where a gift or favour is offered to you, whether it is accepted or not.
  • Gifts that are of low material value may be accepted with the permission of your employer.
  • You should not engage in outside employment or in the conduct of a business without the written consent of your employer.
  • Treat all people fairly and base all actions, decisions and advice on a consideration of all facts.
  • You must never use your position in the household to obtain a private benefit for someone else.
  • Ensure that in terms of all monetary advice or transactions in which you may be involved, you are fully accountable.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of any information to which you may have access.
  • Be honest, impartial and avoid any conflict of interest.
